Varicoceles Treatment for Male Infertility

When the veins above one or both of your testicles are enlarged (think of varicose veins), they can get in the way of normal sperm production.

How It Works

This IR procedure shuts down the enlarged veins and redirects blood flow to healthy veins.

  1. The interventional radiologist makes a tiny incision in your inner thigh, then uses x-ray to guide a catheter to the enlarged veins.
  2. A liquid contrast is injected to make the veins more visible.
  3. Coils or particles are inserted to block/shut down the enlarged veins.
  4. Blood flow is redirected to nearby healthy veins.

What to Expect

  • Procedure time of 30-45 minutes
  • Light sedation to make you relaxed and sleepy
  • A shot of numbing medication in your inner thigh.

After Your Procedure

  • Go home after a 2-hour recovery.
  • Resume moderate activity after 1-2 days
  • Avoid sexual activity for a few weeks
